ROLAND GARROS – The first day of play on Sunday featured both Canadian women in the singles draw.
No. 27 seed Leylah Fernandez. And newcomer Victoria Mboko – who got through the qualifying a day late, on Friday. Thank you to the scheduling people who had Mboko first up at 11 a.m. … and Fernandez last up with a women’s and two men’s best-of-five matches before.
Both had challenging openers, but not overwhelming ones. Mboko set the tone with a tight straight-sets win over Lulu Sun.
But Fernandez was steamrolled by Danilovic, who was a couple of spots out of being seedede but played brilliantly.
The only switch from the original distribution was that Marta Kostyuk’s match was today instead of Monday. She went out in a shocker to qualifier Sara Bejlek and said afterwards that no matter how positive she tries to be, nothing good ever happens at RG.
