Anisimova, up to a career high No. 13 after her run to the Queen’s Club final, might have been a little worn out physically. But her tennis was too good for Andreescu.
Also a first round: Zheng Qinwen – No. 4 in the world as of Monday – was to take in 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. But she withdrew with a neck injury.
And another former Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova, got reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in her first-round match and beat her in straight sets.
In Nottingham, a first-round clash between Petra Kvitova and Tatjana Maria morphed into a clash between lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva and lucky loser Cristina Bucsa.
