FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York – Of course, it’ s great to able to get into Louis Armstrong Stadium to see some high quality tennis for the price of a grounds pass.
The only problem? It takes awhile.
At about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, with Taylor Fritz just about two sets through his match against Tomas Machac (and with reigning women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka to come), here’s what it looked like to get in.
The line stretched all the way back to th statue of Althea Gibson, which is on the side of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Here’s what it looked like.
We’re not sure what happened inside the “virtual queue” tent. But when people came out the other side they were OH SO CLOSE to the final sprint.
Then, of course, they still have to get up to the first level (which you can do by escalator), and then climb all the way up to the unreserved seats in the upper tier.
Funniest were the USTA staff kind of cheering them on at the end – like a bunch of parents at the finish line of a 1k run with a bunch of eight-year-olds huffing and puffing to the tape.
