Matteo Berrettini is back! Hopefully to stay.
His ranking down at No. 57, Berrettini had played just one match since he retired against Casper Ruud in Rome in early May: a five-set loss to Kamil Majchrzak at Wimbledon.
He had entered some events – including Roland Garros and the US Open. But was never able to make the dates. He went out, but at least he’s back on court.
Also in the spotlight in Hangzhou – a night match between Wu Yibing and Zhang Zhizhen. Two Chinese players with plenty of talent and charisma to burn who should have taken Chinese men’s tennis to new heights.
Except, mostly because of so many injuries. It hasn’t happened yet. But it’s not too late.
Zheng, at No. 31 in July 2024, will be playing his first match since losing in a third-set tiebreak to Canadian Gabriel Diallo at Indian Wells – all the way back in early March. He should be able to go with a protected ranking of about No. 50 for awhile. He won a match at United Cup and two in Marseille in February. And everything else was a first-round loss.
The weather in Chengdu meant action was limited to the roofed stadium court.
