Fresh off his wedding in Greece, Denis Shapovalov kicked off his Asian swing against a fairly tough customer in unseeded German Daniel Altmaier.
The two played just once before, but it was a marathon in the second round of Wimbledon a year ago. Shapovalov ended up prevailing, but after winning the first two sets he ended up needing five sets to take it. And it was too tough an order today.
Also in action: Frances Tiafoe, who looked terrible at Davis Cup and was a late scratch for Laver Cup last weekend. He got a pretty tough customer, too, in qualifier Marton Fucsovics. And he, too, couldn’t make it.
In Beijing, all eight qualifying seeds got through their first rounds and will meet for spots in the main draw. This is surprisingly rare. And there’s a definite French flava about the whole thing.
