Tien has had some great fortune – Lorenzo Musetti retired in the quarterfinals, and Daniil Medvedev retired with cramp in the semifinals.
So he had to beat Francisco Cerundolo and Flavio Cobolli to get to the final, essentially. And he wasn’t up to the task.
In Shanghai, the first round of the main draw – no seeds involved, as the top 32 all have byes. Wild card Stan Wawrinka got a night session spot on the main court.
