In Vienna, it was No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner against No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, with Sinner winning in a top-shelf tussle.

In Basel, it’s been a lot more complicated with all the retirements. But the final two survivors were No. 8 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and teenager Joao Fonseca.

For Davidovich Fokina, who has yet to win a title in his career (how many finals he’s reached used to be readily available on the ATP Tour’s player pages but, for some reason, has now disappeared) it would be a huge moment.

(We went through his record, and here’s the intel: he reached the final in Washington this summer, losing a heartbreaker in the third-set tiebreak to Alex de Minaur. He also made the Acapulco and Delray Beach finals this year and the Monte Carlo final in 2022. So he’s given himself chances in 2025. But this was the fourth time he couldn’t get over the final hurdle.

In his defence, he was just outplayed on Sunday.
