Victoria Mboko, who played her final in Doha on Saturday, her sixth straight day on court, had just one day off to get to Dubai and face Jaqueline Cristian. And in the end, they wisely decided to withdraw.
And Leylah Fernandez, who kickstarted her season (finally) with a gutty win over the hard-hitting Liudmila Samsonova, had to turn right around and face a completely different opponent in Janice Tjen.
Not forgetting that it was Tjen who ousted her in the first round of the Australian Open less than a month ago. And did it again here.
Worth noting all of the absences and late scratches in this second of two WTA 1000s: Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Doha champ Karolina Muchova, the returning Zheng Qinwen and Maria Sakkari. And Barbora Krejickova.
