Cana-Chilean Alejandro Tabilo was the only Canadian in action on the men’s side, as Félix Auger-Aliassime awaits a second-round clash with Gaël Monfils that hopefully won’t be as tetchy as their meeting in Laver Cup in Vancouver some years ago.
Tabilo played young and rising Spanish player Rafael Jodar, who had intended to go to play college this this year but, as the top 100 looms, probably made a good call to go it as a full-time pro. Except maybe on this day.
Beyond that, with no seeds in action a lot of the matches eneded up as pretty big dogfights.
Arthur Cazaux, who hadn’t played since retiring in the second round of qualifying in Brisbane with an elbow issue, was in the draw. But he was a late scratch – replaced by lucky loser Vit Kopriva, the No. 1 seed in qualifying.
