Just four round of 16 matches – the top half – on Tuesday as Canadian Victoria Mboko tried and succeeded in getting to the quarterfinals against the very tough Amanda Anisimova.
And the opener – Aryna Sabalenka vs. Naomi Osaka, multiple Slam champions both – is somewhat of an anomaly.
It’s crazy, but these two have only met once. It was in the fourth round of the US Open all the way back in 2018, with Osaka the No. 20 seed (and eventual champion; she ended the year ranked No. 4) and Sabalenka the No. 26 seed. They were both 20.
At this point, Sabalenka is miles ahead.
And the Eala era is over in the desert, as she was dusted by Linda Noskova.
(Indian Wells is three hours behind ET).
