The endless two-week event ended with a women’s final featuring two of the top three in the world, with No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka having beaten No. 2 Elena Rybakina in semis (because of her ascent to No. 2 after Indian Wells, but also after the Miami Open draw was made).
Gauff and Sabalenka were 6-6 in the head-to-head, as Sabalenka looked much better getting to the final day and Gauff clawed and battled and scrambled through numerous three setters to get there.
Sabalenka was going for the rare Sunshine Double – done once in the last decade, by Iga Swiatek in 2022. And she made it.
On Sunday, Sinner is attempting to do the same, the first since Roger Federer in 2017.
(Miami is on EDT).
