No. 1 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 2 Coco Gauff took the court for the first time, making their clay season debuts indoors.
Rybakina arrived fairly late; she only had her first practice on unique surface (which is rather more slippery than outdoor clay) on Monday. Gauff has been there awhile and had the unpredictable Samsonova for her opener. Samsonova hasn’t had a great season; she can be great, or awful. On Thursday, she was good, for awhile. But Gauff was good throughout.
In the nightcap, Leylah Fernandez overcame a 1-5 deficit in the third set to take out Zeynep Sonmez in a train wreck of a match that was also completely engrossing.
(Stuttgart and Rouen are six hours ahead of EDT)
