The only Canadian in action is Cana-Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, who is fresh from winning a big Challenger in France but who is up against a quality veteran in qualifier Pablo Carreño Busta.
They’ve met a couple of times, bot hin hard courts, both close but both won by Carreño Busta.
Also in action is Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who found his coach Francisco Roig poached by Iga Swiatek before the clay season. And who hasn’t played losing his first-round matches in both Indian Wells and Miami.
Mpetshi started off well in his two Australian Open warmup events. But since then, he has lost in the first round in six of seven events. The only exception was a good run in Dubai in February.
Tabilo didn’t play in Rome last year. But the first and only time he played, in 2024, he shocked Novak Djokovic in the third round, then beat Khachanov and Zhang before losing in three sets to Zverev in the semifinals.
