The two-week slog that is the new Masters 1000 format repeats, as Rome is somewhat of a carbon copy of Madrid – without the roofs and the altitude, but with a brand-new little stadium added to what’s quite a tight footprint for an extended joint event.

The men’s qualifying doesn’t have any standout names, per se. But there were some tight battles out there with so much money and potential ranking profit at stake.

And, indeed, the top two seeds went out. That’s a terrible spot to be in – so close to getting into the main draw without having to grind it out. And yet, losing in the first round means you have no shot at sneaking in as a lucky loser.
