It’s the first day for the seeds, as Coco Gauff headlined the night session – along with new Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko.

Mboko eased her way past No. 23 seed Sofia Kenin.

But Leylah Fernandez – returned triumphant from her big title at the WTA 500 in Washington, gets the afternoon session. Which was vocally – and disingenuously – not happy about. As it was, she got an extra day because of the late finish in D.C.

If there was anyone in the draw who’s acclimated to the heat and humidity at this point, it was her. But she went out in a blaze of tears.

In the end, eight seeds were upset, and only six got through – in Gauff’s case, just barely.
