MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Report of Nishikori’s retirement erroneous: agent

The title sponsor of the Elizabeth Moore Sarasota Open, on the record, told a journalist from the Sarasota Herald-Trubune that longtime ATP Tour star Kei Nishikori was playing the final tournament of his career at her event this week.

It turns out, per Nishikori’s agent, that this wasn’t accurate.

We were among those who amplified that story Saturday evening, before hearing back from the agent, because it wasn’t an unsourced rumour. Rather, it came from someone, you had to think, who would know. However, apologies are in order.

The paragraph concerning Nishikori’s “final” tournament participation was removed from the Herald-Tribune story tonight.

Per the newspaper, Moore had said Nishikori had “requested that this tournament serve as his retirement event”.

Nishkori, currently ranked No. 417, was entered in the qualifying at the Elizabeth Moore Sarasota Open, but is getting a wild card into the main draw.

It is not, however, his swan song.

Nishikori himself called it “false info” in a Tweet this morning.

It’s tough to fathom how the tournament director could have gotten this so wrong. But no doubt that will become clearer with time.
