Time for the women to protest, I think. Both men’s semis on Armstrong back-to-back, & the women’s semis at the same time on the Grandstand!? If the tennis powers that be have ever stated that they stand for gender equality, it was just lip service.
It’s not about gender equality. This is not an “equal” tournament. The men’s event is a Masters 1000 with twice as much prize money. The women’s is only a Premier 5.
ESPN is airing it. And the Masters 1000 TV deal is exponentially bigger than the women’s.
So TV basically decided the schedule.
No fans anyway, so having a bigger or smaller court is pretty irrelevant this week.
On the plus side – the women finish earlier. They know EXACTLY when they’re going to play, when to eat, when to warm up. And they get the same amount of rest before the final.
All of this is improvised; the last thing the US Open wants is a delayed tournament taking place in the same venue just days before the start of their big event.
Tks for the explanation. It’s just that I often think the women get short-changed, & this seemed like another time.
Often they do. But the reality is that the men – especially at the Masters 1000 tournament – have the far more lucrative TV contract. So a lot of the scheduling is built around that.
The women do not benefit from joint events. I understand why they cha$e after them. But there’s a payback on the other side.
I’m more curious about why they suddenly switched the women’s doubles semis (which were on Grandstand) and the men’s (which were on Court 10). I may dig a bit. Feels … random. I mean, there’s always a reason but …
