MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

In a motion filed last week responding to the lawsuit brought by former commentator Doug Adler, ESPN says it had no further obligation to him because of his freelance status.

“(But) even if cause were required, Adler’s controversial comment supplied it,” the motion states. “An announcer is responsible for offending the audience, regardless of the announcer’s intent.”

Adler described the play of Venus Williams using an expression well-known to longtime tennis fans. It was misinterpreted; the Internet outcry led ESPN to take him off air.

Adler subsequently suffered a heart attack, and says he cannot find work.
