It was less than six months ago, but the world has completely changed since Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez met Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in the semifinals of the WTA Tour event in Acapulco.
Both were aiming for their first career WTA Tour final. And Zarazua had the added advantage of being the home-country favorite.
But Fernandez prevailed; she lost to Heather Watson in the final.
A week later, tennis shut down.
But Fernandez and Zarazua will have a rematch on Sunday, in rather different circumstances.
Instead of a huge crowd in Acapulco, they will play in front of … no fans at all, as the WTA Tour returns to North America at the Top Seed Open in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
It won’t be a semifinal, though; it will be a first-round qualifying match.
Here are the highlights of that meeting back in February.
