Open Court

MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Open Court’s 1st annual “Fugly Kit of the year” award – women

There were a lot of fashion fails on the women’s side this year – those ill-located Stella ruffles come to mind.

But this year’s first annual Open Court Fugly Award, women’s division, was still a no-brainer.

We present to you Qiaodan’s initial foray into women’s tennis, and the resulting hot mess they made of the fabulous Svetlana Kuznetsova at Wimbledon.

Again, this award goes to the clothing sponsor, NOT the player, who rarely has any say in the matter.

Kuznetsova signed with this company at the beginning of 2013. “I like so much the quality of the clothes. I like the design a lot,” she said at the time.

After Wimbledon, her take might have been more like this:

The tie-dye look she sported earlier in the year wasn’t bad. Actually, most of it wasn’t all that bad – at least it was a little different, a departure from the nameless, repetitive stuff the major brands were coming out with.

She came up with some very cool warmup stuff for the practice court.

Well, okay, this one wasn’t the greatest. But it was chilly in Paris.

And then, came Wimbledon.

How to describe all that was wrong it?

Was it the fit? Check.

Was it the length? Check.

Was it the big fail on the bosom tattoo coverage? Indeed.

Was is the inadequate, er, support? Yup.

Was it the wide landing strip of mesh in the front? Check.

Was it the fact that it was so wide, any movement sent the whole thing practically up and over her head? Check.

Was it the complicated and too-loose shoulder strap thingies? Checkety check. And let us not even get into the resulting tan lines.

Kuznetsova isn’t actually a dress kind of girl in the first place. So, damn, it needs to be a REALLY good dress.

If she showed up on court with that Australian Open practice kit, with the yellow top and the stars shorts with matching cap, we’d have applauded her for going with her heart, and adding an original twist. That was great.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

This is an attractive lady, in a mercifully non-Barbie way. This is what she CAN look like:

We can only hope her clothing sponsor does right by her in 2015. We’ll be watching.

Your other nominees for our 2014 (Dis)Honour roll are welcome.
