WIMBLEDON – There are all kinds of ways to hit a tennis ball, and Hsieh Su-Wei and Luksika Kumkhum demonstrated a bunch of ’em in the final round of qualifying.
It was a match that would make two-handed forehander Monica Niculescu proud, and it was the most compelling match on the women’s side in the final round of qualifying.
Hsieh’s savvy completely overwhelmed Kumkhum in the first set (yes, that’s a pretty rad new look for the Thai player, who notably upset Petra Kvitova in the first round of the 2014 Australian Open). But she fought.
It ended up 6-1, 5-7, 9-7 for Hsieh, who then blew away Kaia Kanepi 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the main draw before losing to Lucie Safarova.
