INDIAN WELLS – It’s been a long time coming, but Madison Keys is preparing to make her 2017 debut.
The young American, currently ranked No. 9 even though she hasn’t played a match since the WTA Tour Finals in Singapore last October, looked fit and ready to go.
She didn’t hit many backhands during Open Court’s look-in, but those she did hit seemed fine as she comes back from wrist surgery.
The most exciting thing was a seeming eagerness to move forward to the net on any short ball. And it’s worth mentioning, on a tour with a lot of pretty awful volley technique, that hers looks sound. The high one-handed backhand volley, in particular, borders on fantastic in the women’s game, and it’s nice to see someone hitting it.
Hopefully all that practice aggression translates to the match court.
About the blacked-out racquet … it seems that Wilson will be coming out with a new stick, and Keys will be the face of it on the female side. Stay tuned …
