MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

IW ’17: Pospisil practices, and meets some old friends

INDIAN WELLS – The qualifying grind continues for Vasek Pospisil.

He needs to win two matches to make the main draw at the BNP Paribas Open. And he looks to have a good shot.

Pospisil will face American wild card Mitchell Krueger in the first round and if he wins that, he would need to bet American veteran Rajeev Ram or young American Jared Donaldson to make the main draw.

Here are some pics from Monday.

Peter Polansky also is in the qualifying draw; he gets up-and-coming Swede Elias Ymer in the first round. If he wins that, he would face either Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan or Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador.

Pospisil’s parents, Milos and Mila, drove down from Vernon, B.C. (as they did a year ago) to escape the snow and watch their son play.

(Those two would definitely be in the medal round for “Most Awesome tennis parents”, without a doubt).

As Pospisil finished up, he ran into a couple of familiar faces, from back when Galo Blanco coached Pospisil’s Davis Cup teammate Milos Raonic, and Juan Ozoh was his trainer (Blanco later worked with Filip Peliwo).

Blanco is coaching Karen Khachanov of Russia these days (he joked to Open Court that he picked the big fellas because that was something he could never aspire to himself). How big is the guy? Pospisil looks positively average next to him, and Pospisil is a big dude.

Here’s some video.

Blanco looked pretty put together (his sunglasses matched his outfit) for a guy whose luggage got lost en route. That’s what Nike friends are for. 🙂

Raonic, meanwhile, officially pulled out of the tournament (if you follow this website’s Twitter, you already knew this was likely to happen yesterday).
