No Rome wild card for Schiavone

Even though Francesca Schiavone was the first Italian woman in history to win a major (the 2010 French Open) and helped Italy win three Fed Cups, the Italian Open won’t give the 36-year-old a main-draw wild card in her farewell season.

She’s had her share … time to go younger, director Sergio Palmieri says. Bla, bla bla.

Who’s getting them? Sara Errani and Maria Sharapova; both are 30 this month.

Sharapova is returning from a doping suspension.

Schiavone’s revenge? She won the WTA tournament in Bogotá Saturday – on red clay.
