Non-junior Kratzer wins US girls’ title

Wimbledon junior champ Claire Liu and French Open champ Whitney Osuigwe are No. 1 and No. 2 in the world.

But in the world of USTA seeding, Liu was No. 2 and Osuigwe No. 8 at the US junior nationals last week. They met in the quarterfinals.

Osuigwe won a marathon, 7-5, 6-7(8), 6-4. She had little left for Ashley Kratzer, who won the title AND a wild card into the US Open.

Kratzer, 18, has never had a junior ITF ranking. But she’s No. 341 on the WTA Tour. She beat Kelly Chen (No. 861) in the final.
