US Open pics: Nadal looking good

NEW YORK – If it weren’t for the fact that Roger Federer landed in Rafael Nadal’s half of the draw, he’d likely draw more respect as the top seed.

That’s especially true given that five of the top 11 players in the world are missing this US Open because of injury.

Then again, the Mallorcan’s defeats at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and the following week in Cincinnati didn’t offer a ton of optimism about his prospects at the final Grand Slam of the season.

Nadal is looking beastly – tan burnished, muscles fine-tuned.

But will this superb opportunity to add the 2017 US Open to his Grand Slam total pass him by?

Or will he rise to the big occasion and make a big move?

Nadal didn’t look particularly good here a few days ago in practice, seemingly an issue with his right knee out of nowhere.

But on Saturday, all looked fine. Nadal was practicing with Tomas Berdych, who could be his round-of-16 opponent.

Apparently neither had an issue with that, even though the draw was already out. Th

Nadal wouldn’t seem to have to many opponents who can trouble him in that section.
