Canadian Rebecca Marino, the former No. 38 returning from a five-year retirement on the ITF circuit, qualified for a $25,000 tournament in Japan Monday.
She defeated the No. 1 seed, Chihiro Muramatsu, a 19-year-old Japanese lefty, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the main draw.
It’s the third tournament on this second tour.
Marino’s events back were four events at the $15,000 level in Antalya, Turkey.
The 27-year-old has gone 25-3 so far at this level. She has gone from no ranking to her current No. 565, which tells you how much toil is involved for players starting at the entry-level tournaments to move up.
