The new ATP Tour super-event planned for Jan. 2020 is still in the planning stages.
But the Perth, Australia Sunday Times reports the Hopman Cup mixed exhibition event may be a casualty. The newspaper reports the Western Australia government is prepared to divert the funding to the new ATP event.
Roger Federer has already confirmed for 2019. His return this year resulted in record attendance.
Tennis Australia said it planned to honor an agreement with the event that expires in 2022.
But a government spokesperson said it was “committed to supporting world-class tennis in Perth”. Sounds deliberately vague.
