You likely won’t have heard of Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum.
The 25-year-old has played almost exclusively in Asia, generally sitting around the top 100 and venturing west only for the Grand Slams.
But as she reaches a career high of No. 80 after winning the WTA 125K in Mumbai, she’s trailblazer at home.
Kumkhum is one of the small (but increasing) number of openly gay women on the WTA Tour. She credits her family’s early acceptance. But at home in Bangkok, a country friendly to the foreign LGBT community still discriminates against its own.
