Longtime Memphis Open home to close

The Racquet Club of Memphis was one of the last real, actual tennis clubs to host a major event, until it moved to Long Island this year.

And now, the home for the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships/Kroger St. Jude Championship/Cellular South Cup also will be consigned to history.

The Daily Memphian reports the club, which has 10 indoor and 15 outdoor courts, will close in the spring.

It has come up against the time-honoured dilemma of clubs in growing urban areas – the land is far more valuable for real-estate development than it is for running a tennis club.
