News from British tennis journalist David Law Sunday that longtime Tour player and coach Peter McNamara has died.
McNamara got the news from McNamara’s wife Petra who said her husband, who turned 64 a few weeks ago, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday night.
He had been fighting prostate cancer.
The affable Aussie had been a familiar fixture around the circuit, having coached several players – most recently Qiang Wang for four years, until February of this year.
Wang, 27, is at a career-high ranking in singles of No. 14 this week. She was outside the top 100 when she began working with McNamara.
Top-10 singles player
As a player, McNamara reached No. 7 in the world in singles in 1983 and won five singles titles and 19 doubles titles.
He won six of those in 1979, and another six in 1983.
Most often, he was paired with another Aussie “Mac”, Paul McNamee, with whom he won 14 of those titles. Two of them were majors: the duo won the Wimbledon men’s doubles title in 1980 and 1982.
His career-high ranking in doubles was No. 3. He also represented Australia in 10 Davis Cup ties between 1980 and 1986.
