For about 40 minutes, 31-year-old Tatiana Golovin held her own with an 18-year-old from Slovenia ranked No. 131 in the world.
But after that, it was a struggle as Kaja Juvan beat Golovin 6-3, 6-1 in Luxembourg qualifying, in her return to action after an 11 1/2 year retirement.
Just 20 when she had to quit, Golovin had played just a few practice sets before deciding to test herself.
“I was able to find the will, the aggressiveness, the energy. Not for long enough, but I felt it in a few games,” she told L’Équipe. “It’s already a good first step. I’m motivated to continue.”
