More tournament cancellations through July 31

As expected, the various tennis stakeholders announced the cancellation of additional tournaments Friday, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

After the previous batch of cancellations ran through July 13 and Wimbledon, the new group will extend the shutdown of tennis until at least July 31.

On the WTA side, that means that a series of post-Wimbledon clay-court events will not take place: Bastad, Lausanne, Bucharest, and Jurmala. Two more could possibly be rescheduled.

“A decision regarding the dates in which Karlsruhe and Palermo may be played along with further updates to the WTA calendar will be made in June,” the WTA said in a press release.

ATP summer clay not to be

For the ATP, clay court tournaments in Hamburg, Bastad, Gstaad, Umag and Kitzbühel will not take place. The grass-court event in Newport also is cancelled (which takes the annual International Tennis Hall of Fame weekend along with it).

And the beginning of the U.S. summer hard-court season also is a no-go, with Atlanta and Los Cabos (Mexico) on the list. All Challenger tournaments are also cancelled.

As for the ITF, it also is extending the shutdown to July 31 for all events including juniors, seniors, wheelchair, beach tennis as well as the men’s and women’s ITF World Tennis Tour.

If that’s the end of the cancellations – and that’s a dream scenario – the first tournaments back would be the joint event in Washington, D.C., the Citi Open, as well as the WTA Tour stop in San Jose, California.
