In the absence of a Laver Cup for the women, the just-announced Credit One Bank Invitational sounds like the best “re-opening” event so far.
A promo running on Tennis Channel Friday during the four-women UTR event from Florida announces a “Laver Cup” format, with 16 women.
It will be held in Charleston, S.C. starting on June 23 and running for six days.
There are to be two teams, with 16 singles and eight doubles matches in all.
In addition to prize money, the event – even without fans – will be used as a fundraiser for the Medical University of South Carolina’s frontline workers.
It will take place at LTP Daniel Island – which is the new name of what everyone has long known as the Family Circle Tennis Center, home of the Volvo Car Open in April.
With the acquisition of the tournament by local businessman Mike Navarro (whose daughter Emma, just out of the juniors, gets a spot in the field), it was renamed last June. The WTA Tour event, of course, was one of the casualties of the coronavirus shutdown.
Impressive field expected
And the announced participants so far makes it the highest-level field we’ve seen.
Bianca Andreescu, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka, Amanda Anisimova, Monica Puig, Ajla Tomljanovic, Danielle Collins, Alison Riske, Shelby Rogers, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Jennifer Brady and two more Canadians, Leylah Fernandez and Genie Bouchard.
Also on board is Charlestonian Emma Navarro.
You wonder if they tried to get a Williams sister, or Coco Gauff. Regardless, a terrific field.
