French Federation boss confirms “some” fan attendance at RG

As the French Open confirmed Wednesday it was pushing back its newly-rescheduled fall dates an extra week to allow for potential Masters 1000/WTA Mandatory tournaments in Madrid and Rome to be held, it also confirmed something else.

This year’s Roland Garros will not be played behind closed doors, as the US Open is planning to do in a few months’ time.

Instead, the tournament, which now will begin Sept. 27 (with qualifying to start Sept. 21) will have fans on site.

How many? To be determined, per Agence France-Presse following a conference call with French Federation President Bernard Giudicelli.

“There will be a number – a percentage defined by common agreement with the public entities … It is still premature to give any (number) today that would more than an estimate,” Giudicelli said.

“We have several work periods from here to the end of the month, and it’s only towards that period that we’ll be able to outline how we will organize and commercialize the ticketing,” Giudicelli added. “We’re working with the public entities on the organizational procedures for the tournament. For the moment, we haven’t made any definitive decisions.”
