It was fairly obvious that Serena Williams was not happy with the way she played in a 6-2, 6-4 over Margarita Gasparyan and her glorious one-handed backhand.
But she was at least happy with her compete level.
Now she has to prepare for a third-round match against another former US Open champion, countrywoman Sloane Stephens.
Williams leads the head-to-head 5-1, having to come back from a set down twice to win. But the two, crazily, have not faced each other in … five years – since the 2015 French Open.
That was before Stephens missed a year due to foot surgery and came back to win the US Open. And it was before Williams also missed significant time, after the birth of daughter Olympia.
Here’s what Williams said Thursday night after the win.
