MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Polansky

.

ROLAND GARROS – Peter Polansky’s first-round opponent in this year’s Roland Garros qualifying was not the most fortuitous draw he’s ever had.

A former world No. 21, 33-year-old Leonardo Mayer made the fourth round a year ago, a run that included an upset over last week’s Rome finalist Diego Schwartzman.

Down to No. 123 and in qualifying, he remains a quality clay-court player.

Which is not to say that Polansky didn’t have his chances in the first set of a 7-5, 6-0 defeat.

Polansky had two set points on Mayer’s serve when he led 5-2 in that first set.

They flew away quickly, through no fault of Polansky’s. Mayer just unloaded on a couple of winners, and that was that.

Polansky had a support group on hand Tuesday – countryman Brayden Schnur, girlfriends, his good friend Arina Rodionova and American Madison Brengle. (Stephanie Myles/OpenCourt.ca)

Mayer runs it out

Polansky was broken when he served for the first set at 5-4. And that was … pretty much that.

You could tell by his reaction after that first set was over that it was going to take a lot to come back.

Shirtless, sitting in his chair, he muttered to himself most of the changeover.

But Mayer had wings at that point. And there wasn’t much to be done.

Here’s what it looked like.

Two more Canadians on Wednesday

Weather permitting – the warm, perfect weather the last two days is going to give way to reality beginning on Wednesday – two Canadians will try to win their second-round matches.

Brayden Schnur plays American Sebastian Korda late in the day, when there’s a bigger chance of thunderstorms. There also is rain expected in the morning, a few hours before play begins.

The courts have been pretty dry the first two days. That rain should do a lot to slow them up.

It’s going to cool off quite a bit. And the wind is going to pick up considerably.

In other words, the conditions are going to change completely. And the fairly dead new Wilson official ball is going to feel even deader.

Steven Diez plays big-serving American Christopher Eubanks, likely around 1 p.m. or so. And you have to give him a legit shot, on the dirt.
