Why are there women’s tournaments in Charleston two weeks in a row?
Well – originally they were supposed to play the new “Billie Jean King Cup” finals in Hungary – a whole week, first time sort of like the “new” Davis Cup Finals.
And other countries are playing “playoff” ties – as Canada is in Serbia this weekend.
So they didn’t schedule a WTA event that week, as is normal during these “Fed Cup/ BJK Cup” weeks.
There was one smaller “125K” tournament in China, but that one got cancelled.
So the very wealthy fellow who owns the Charleston event stepped in and offered to host a second event at the last minute, to give players a place to play.
Some of the players were there last week, for the higher-level “500” tournament.
Many of them have come up from a similar “250” tournament in Bogotá, Colombia last week.
