Canadians Rebecca Marino and Carol Zhao used their protected rankings to get into a 125K in the Charleston, S.C. area.

The tournament is one of many sponsored by Charleston WTA tournament owner Ben Navarro, whose interest in women’s tennis is definitely … encouraged by the fact that his daughter Emma is an aspiring pro.

(And yes, she is in the field).

Also notable is that Tatjana Maria is back this week. Maria, the mother of 8-year-old Charlotte, gave birth to daughter Cecilia in early April.

She had already announced a maternity break just before the pandemic hit in March 2020. But it appears that ended in a tragic loss a few months later.

The Marias bounced back inspirationally. And now they’re a family of four and back on the road.
