MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

BJK Cup qualifiers around the planet, as teams vie for finals spots (final results)

It was the first Billie Jean King Cup tie for Canada at home in … eons.

To the point where it was Canadian captain Heidi el Tabakh’s seventh tie at the helm. And it’s the first time she guided the team on home soil.

The only top-250 player from Latvia who had planned to play (Jelena Ostapenko) had a wrist issue and bowed out. Anastasija Sevastova, an experienced player who has been in the top 20, has been out since the Australian Open – she had lost in the first round in 6-of-8 tournaments since last year’s Wimbledon.

So the way was clear for Leylah Fernandez and Rebecca Marino – playing at home – to dominate this tie. And they did, as Canada swept Latvia 4-0.

The winner (as with all the winners this weekend) will qualify for the finals, which will be held … well, we don’t know yet. Kind of like Davis Cup.

Here are the final results for the seven qualifying ties (Belgium got a walkover from Belarus because of … well, world events).

(In the European kinda way, the home squad is first).
