The doubles schedule in Madrid was late-starting and poorly planned. And so they’ve found themselves in a bind with Jessica Pegula still in – and playing late-night matches in singles.

Regardless of Thursday’s result, Pegula (and Coco Gauff) had to come back at 1 p.m. Friday – and then play the semifinal if they won.

It held up the other teams as well.

In the end, they lost the first, giving Pegula a bit of a breather before Saturday’s singles final.

In Saint-Malo, most of the seeds have survived to the quarterfinals.
