WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was nearly 12 years ago that Canadian Rebecca Marino met Venus Williams, in her Grand Slam main-draw debut, on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the 2020 US Open.

They met again, with so much water under the bridge for both since then.

There’s so much symmetry, it’s ridiculous.

And Venus has so much star power, that a former champion of the tournament (and the No. 1 seed Jessica Pegula) is playing the girl who grew up right down the street, Hailey Townsend – and they’re not even on the stadium.

It was a bit of a trainwreck of a match. But Marino pulled through.
