FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – All three Canadian women in the singles draw got through their first round (with only Bianca Andreescu losing a set).
And all face sterner tasks in the second round on Wednesday.
Both Bianca Andreescu (really late) and Leylah Fernandez (fourth on her court) had to wait around all day and into the evening to play.
For Fernandez, it wasn’t the result she wanted. For Andreescu, who finished just after 1 a.m., it was an emphatic win over one of the form players of the summer.
Rebecca Marino was up a little earlier, with a winnable match against Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur, which she put away in two sets.

Great results for Andreescu and Marino. Both a bit surprising, even though Marino’s match with the Ukrainian was indeed winnable, but look at Halep. The difference in weapons between Halep and Marino counted, it seems, for a lot. Plus Muratoglu seems to have botched the scouting on Snigur. Anyway, young Snigur was refreshing.
