After a shock win over Spain, Canada led Group B going into the final day and had every chance of qualifying for the finals in November.

The questions in the morning before the lineups were announced – would the battered Vasek Pospisil play singles? And which of their singles players would Serbia use?

In the end, they saved Pospisil for the doubles. But Félix Auger-Aliassime’s comprehensive win over Miomir Kecmanovic sealed the deal. And when Pospisil’s knee went on him just three games into the doubles, he retired.

The job was done.
