SAN DIEGO – Wild card Genie Bouchard had a tough ask in her opening match at the WTA tournament in Cluj-Napoca.

She took on the No. 2 seed, Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, and ended up having to retire after the first set with a leg injury.

In San Diego, wild card Leylah Fernandez also was playing – but with a 10-hour time difference from Romania, it will be much, much later. But the outcome was the same even though Fernandez didn’t get injured.

So did Gabriela Dabrowski, Rebecca Marino and Carol Zhao – Basically, most of the Canadian BJK Cup team. Only Dabrowski survived the day.
