MELBOURNE, Australia – If it weren’t for bad luck, 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu wouldn’t have had much luck at all.
She began the 2023 season – a hopeful time for all, a clean slate – looking to bounce back from all the challenges of 2022.
But with the persistent rain in Auckland at the season opener, she ended up indoors and hurt her ankle on the slippery courts.
On Sunday, Raducanu practiced and after about a half hour, had the heavy taping removed from the ankle to test it out.
She looked fine. But it was mostly serves and returns, and there wasn’t much movement involved.
She plays Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch promptly at 11 a.m., as the 2023 Australian begins.
Hopefully for her that unfortunate injury isn’t going to be a factor.
