MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Davis Cup qualifiers feature Paul, Wawrinka, Tsitsipas, Rune et al (final results)

There are no ATP Tour events this week. But a number of top players are headed to locations all over the world to play Davis Cup qualifiers.

The winners get to take part in the finals playoffs, after the US Open in September, with the ultimate goal being part of the final 8 in Malaga in November.

There has been plenty of upheaval in recent months with this venerated competition having ended the “Kosmos rule”.

It’s tough to know what’s in store – one casualty of that is the three day, best-of-five format that made the ties much harder to win and far less dependent on chance.

But it is what it is.

Here are the lineups and results for the ties – some of which tookplace Friday and Saturday, the others Saturday and Sunday.

The 12 winners join 2022 champions Canada, finalists Australia, and wild cards Italy and Spain in the 2023 playoffs, which will happen after the US Open.

All of the details and live scores are here.

Group I playoffs include Tsitsipas, Rune, Nishioka, …

We’ll keep track of some lower-level ties that involve bigger-name players – notably Greece hosting Ecuador, and Denmark hosting India.

Stefanos Tsitsipas headlined for Greece (while top Ecuadorian singles player Emilio Gomez was playing a Challenger in Cleveland and then the Dallas Open).

Holger Rune led Denmark. Neither had much backup.

Yoshihito Nishioka played for Japan  against Poland, which didn’t have top-ranked Hubert Hurkacz or Kamil Majchrzak, who is dealing with an anti-doping charge. They will have veteran doubles specialist Lukasz Kubot, 40, and Jan Zielinski, who reached the Australian Open doubles final with Hugo Nys.

Ernest Gulbis suited up for Latvia against Israel.

In another notable return, Cesar Ramirez (a former top-10 junior who served a 4-year suspension for doping, is back and will represent Mexico for the first time since 2014; he first suited up in 2008, when he was still a junior; he’s now 33. Newest Mexican Ernesto Escobedo, the American who just changed his citizenship, is not in the lineup.

Here are the World Group I ties.

And here are the World Group II ties.
