MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Madrid Open – Sunday, May 7, 2023 final results

No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz was expected to be in the Madrid men’s singles final.

Lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff? Not so much.

But the German veteran has shown well vs Alcaraz in two previous meetings. His biggest problem will be that Alcaraz is even better now. Also – after eight matches during the tournament, he’s probably on fumes. But until the very end of an excellent final, it didn’t show.

The women’s doubles final was a promising one between top seeds Gauff and Pegula, and the pickup team of Azarenka and Haddad Maia. But in the end, the No. 1 seeds went down fairly meekly.

(Madrid is six hours ahead of EDT).
