In the end, Leylah Fernandez’s quarterfinal match against Tatjana Maria came on a little earlier than planned. But it didn’t go Fernandez’s way.

She’s struggling with the service toss again, and a mechanical change to the motion that worked okay under very little pressure early in the week was tested, not too successfully.

Fernandez was befuddled by the arrray of slices, and her decision-making about how to deal with them didn’t work out.
