No. 3 seed Jelena Ostapenko and No. 4 Liudmila Samsonova see their first action of the week, as the playoff scenarios get clearer in this second-tier WTA Finals event in Zhuhai.

The assortment of players for the tournament is actually a fairly intriguing one – players who didn’t make the Cancun finals but who have all had their moments during the 2023 season just the same.

In Tampico, only three matches got (partially) under way on Wednesday because of the weather, so they attempted to finish those and double up on quarterfinals on Thursday.

They didn’t get there, although they nearly finished the second round – just one suspended match.
